The disappearing river at Loggerheads
Recently, I went in search of a disappearing river at Loggerheads Country Park, near Moel Famau, in between Ruthin and Mold in North Wales!
Often, when there is little rainfall and hot weather, the River Alyn in Flintshire and Denbighshire disappears deep beneath the ground, reappearing further downstream.
In this recent video, and whilst in search of the disappearing river at Loggerheads, I talk about the industrial archaeology which surrounds this phenomenon and explain exactly why this happens. I also visit some of the related structures and archaeology still visible around the park.
It was so lovely to be back at Loggerheads Country Park. I worked here for five years whilst working for the Heather and Hillforts Project and it has a very special place in my heart. It is also really close to Moel Famau Country Park and so many hillforts! It is a great place for a day out, or even a mini break in the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. I am so lucky to live in the area!
